Sibelius on film

Sibelius on film

són – Southampton’s new professional orchestra, under founder conductor Robin Browning – launched in November 2015 with an all-Sibelius programme in Turner Sims, joining the global celebrations in the composer’s 150th anniversary year. A sell-out event – in the presence of the Finnish Cultural Attache, Honorary Consul and director of SibeliusONE (the International Sibelius Society) – the concert featured celebrated pianist David Owen Norris, and complete performances of Valse Triste, Pelleas et Melisande, plus a UK premiere performance of the original version of Sibelius’ Impromptu for Strings.

These brilliant short films, made by classical film experts WashMedia, were all commissioned by són, and capture the orchestra, players and people behind són in interviews, rehearsal and performance.

In addition, as part of the promotion leading up to the event, Robin Browning shot and edited the final film shown here. Showing Robin in conversation about són, Sibelius and more with former Radio 3 broadcaster Piers Burton-Page, this documentary also contains archive footage of Sibelius himself at the piano, at work composing, and walking around the grounds of his home at Ainola.
